Today from Coffee Break:

Britain may grant tax breaks for 2nd wives
British tax officials are considering breaks for Muslims who
are allowed as many as four wives under religious rules to
make taxes more "family friendly." Existing laws allow
deductions for only one wife for inheritance tax purposes
but Muslim activists are asking Inland Revenue to relax the
rules, the Times of London reports. "Wives and immediate
children should be exempt from inheritance tax," Ahmad
Thomson, of the Association of Muslim Lawyers, told the
Times. "If the government is family friendly, they should
change a tax which is unfairly hitting minority religious
values." British law currently bans marrying more than one
spouse at a time and such action could result in bigamy
charges. Muslim women with second-, third- and fourth-wife
status are considered mistresses under the law and have no
legal or tax rights.

Washington D.C. - A convict broke out of jail in Washington
D.C., then a few days later accompanied his girlfriend to
her trial for robbery. At lunch, he went out for a sandwich.
She needed to see him, and thus had him paged. Police
officers recognized his name and arrested him as he returned
to the courthouse in a car he had stolen over the lunch hour.

Ionia, Michigan - When two service station attendants
refused to hand over the cash to an intoxicated robber, the
man threatened to call the police. They still refused, so
the robber called the police and was arrested.

Radnor, Pennsylvania - Police interrogated a suspect by
placing a metal colander on his head and connecting it with
wires to a photocopy machine. The message "He's lying" was
placed in the copier, and police pressed the copy button
each time they thought the suspect wasn't telling the truth.
Believing the "lie detector" was working, the suspect
confessed.

Clean Laffs (M-F)

At the UPS cargo phone center where I worked, a woman called  and said, "I need a baseball quote."

I immediately answered with Yogi Berra's famous "It ain't
over 'til it's over!"

There was a brief moment of silence before the woman asked, "What was that?"

"You asked me for a baseball quote," I responded, "and that was the first thing that came into my head."

"Oh," she replied. "My husband told me to call and get a
baseball quote."

I asked if she wanted to ship something, and she said she
did. Then it dawned on me: "Do you mean you want a ballpark figure?"

RECIPE: MASHED & BAKED POTATO CASSEROLE

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

INGREDIENTS:
5 pounds potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
2 tablespoons minced onion
2 eggs
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
1-1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 2.8-ounce can French-fried onions, chopped coarsely

DIRECTIONS:
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Coat a 2-quart casserole
dish with nonstick cooking spray. Place the potatoes in
a large pot and add just enough water to cover. Bring to
a boil over high heat, reduce the heat to medium and cook
for 12 to 15 minutes, or until fork-tender; drain. In a
large bowl, with an electric beater on medium speed, beat
the potatoes and cream cheese until smooth. Add the onion,
eggs, flour, parsley, salt, and pepper, and continue to
beat until well blended. Spoon the potato mixture into the
casserole dish. Sprinkle with the French-fried onions and
bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until heated through and the
edges are golden.

YIELD: 6-8 Servings
Category: Potatoes, Side Dishes
